New Library Section: Discussion Threads
Aug 29, 2008 - 3:12 PM - by Akasha
|
With the revamp of the Library, I took the opportunity to sneak in another category: Discussion Threads! When you go into a real life Library, it's not just books - there are newspapers, journals and other sources of information. So, our Library is no longer just guides. Every now and then you get a really good, informative thread, one that brings about a great in-depth discussion or the crunching of numbers and facts. I'll be keeping my eye out for these threads (and please feel free to report them or bring to my attention) to start filling up this section of the Library. Just think of it as the official 'bookmark' section of the site.
Breaking the champagne glass over the bow, is our very first thread: Common destro PvP misconceptions, created by Redmage!
Warlocks time in the spotlight is right around the corner!
Koraa (blue poster) stated the following in reply to a thread on the official beta forums: We'll be doing some considerable work on Warlocks before that patch hits.
Eeeeeexcellent!
New information on Buff/Debuff Stacking
Pernicious came across some new entries on wotlkwiki.info, more specifically, they've put up some information on Buff/Debuff Stacking: With the release of upcoming content patch players will see a change in the way we allow buffs and debuffs to stack exclusively in a raid. For the most part, what this change means is that many buffs and debuffs that were previously allowed to stack together no longer can, and that many buffs and debuffs that only a single talent specialization could bring can now be brought by multiple different specializations. The philosophy behind this change shows up in many of the changes we have made in Wrath of The Lich King, such as when we made almost all buffs raid-wide. We want players to be able to form raids and parties based on who they want to play with, rather than who has the correct talents and abilities to min-max their raid performance.
Raid composition will still matter to some extent, but without this change, it would have overwhelmed every other aspect of raid planning (as we added new capabilities to each of 30 different talent trees). You no longer need to rigidly control the melee/spellcaster balance of your raid, or make sure every group has all the critical buffing classes, etc. This change has many class balance implications.
IMPORTANT! Before we are done, we will thoroughly test the performance of every class. It should not be assumed that one class' current performance relative to others in beta is final. [ More... ]
There's LOTS more to read, so head on into the discussion thread to keep reading...

WotLK Mount - Spectral Gryphon
In the current build of the Wrath of the Lich King beta, people dying in Storm Peaks are resurrected on a ghost flying mount ! Running to your corpse could be very hard in a region with so many mountains and developpers solved it by giving you a very nice mount. Obviously, its only purpose is to make corpse running easier in the zone and it fades off once you're back among the living.

Discussion Thread: Do you feel bad when you leave a guild?
Twista kicks off our latest discussion thread, questioning if you feel bad when you leave a guild? There many reasons players leave guilds be it good or bad, but inside that evil Warlock heart of yours do you feel bad when it happens?

Discussion Thread: Why Don't we get to Control Infernals?
DrkSnpr14 has a bit of a rant, one that he's taken to the official forums! "Seriously, I'd rather have that then a 51 point talent in demo then Illidan form. If you can get past how cool Metamorphasis looks, it's not spectacular at all.
When I see Hunters being able to tame exotic pets with their talents, It just makes me wonder WHY warlocks can't spec into controlling an Infernal, or a doomguard."

News Catchup!
Aug 28, 2008 - 3:14 AM - by Akasha
|
Now that the Library is all sorted, let's catch up on some news!
Pre Wrath Content Patch is coming!
With the release of Wrath of the Lich King approaching, we wanted to provide you with some important information. In preparation for the expansion, we will be issuing a new content patch in the coming weeks. Much like the patch made available shortly before The Burning Crusade's release, this content patch is designed to bridge current game content with that of the expansion and will contain some exciting changes and additions.
We have outlined some of the larger features scheduled to release with the patch below:
- New class spells and talents.
- Barbershops in capital cities.
- Zeppelin towers outside of Orgrimmar and Tirisfal Glades.
- Stormwind Harbour.
- In-game guild calendar.
- Hunter pet skill revamp.
- New profession: Inscription.
- Two brand-new Arenas featuring challenging new layouts, terrain hazards, and moving obstacles:
- Orgrimmar Arena.
- Dalaran Arena.
As mentioned above, this is not a comprehensive list, just some of the major highlights. We’ll post the full patch notes as soon as they’re available.
Regarding Inscription, please note that all Burning Crusade players will be able to select Inscription as one of their two professions and level up to a skill level of 375 with it. Upon the release of Wrath of the Lich King, players who purchase and install the expansion will be able to continue leveling in Inscription and the other professions beyond 375.

Demonic Circle Video
Preview of the demonic circle spell
As a Beta Warlock!
Debuff and Eluminite, along with others that will jump in I'm sure, have offered up their WotLK Beta ability to answer any of your questions, and provide feedback and information on what you want to know! "If any of you have questions about how talents work, how much dps certain specs do, or want screenshots/video of something let me know and I will do my best to report back with my findings. ~ Debuff"
.: Discussion Thread :.
Wrath of the Lich King Arenas
We want to provide some information about the direction of the Arena system. Upon the release of Wrath of the Lich King, players will find they are still able to access the Arena system at level 70 for rated matches. Those competing in the Arenas at 70 will still be able to attain items using Arena points and rankings; however, we do not currently plan to offer new items or titles for this bracket. Players who level past 70 will have their Arena points reset to 0 and be removed from all Arena teams in the level-70 bracket.
Two new skirmish brackets (71-75, 76-80) will be available for players who wish to hone their Arena skills while leveling in Northrend. Those who reach level 80 will once again have the opportunity to create new Arena teams and play in rated matches once a new season starts. New items, titles, and end-of-season rewards will be offered to the most successful teams at level 80. Additionally, the sets released for the Arenas in Wrath of the Lich King will no longer share aesthetic similarities with tiered raiding gear. We want those equipped with the best PvP rewards and those with the best raiding sets to stand out from each other. Players at level 80 will also have the opportunity to compete in two new Arenas featuring challenging new layouts, terrain hazards, and moving obstacles.

No Flying Mounts in Dalaran
For the time being, it is intended that you cannot fly within the city of Dalaran. We want you to be able to fly into Dalaran and fly out of Dalaran (via mounting at the flying landing or in the sewer pipe) but we don't want people flying around the city streets. We do want people to be able to mount on their ground mounts in the city (but not indoors).
This isn't entirely set up properly yet and not all things are working. Most of this will be implemented over the coming weeks. If it's horrible, we'll change it. But that's what we're trying out right now.
A big complaint of Shattrath was that it did not feel like a city. A goal of Dalaran was to re-capture the bustling street feel of places like Stormwind and Orgrimmar. Flying mounts work contrary to this goal.

Library Try #3!
Aug 24, 2008 - 4:34 AM - by Akasha
|
After two weeks, a couple of polls and entire weekend dedicated to the cause, I think I've finally settled on a Library layout that not only provides better functionality than it's original single forum form, but more importantly, looks good! In it's original forum form, the Library worked ok, however with more and more guides being submitted, things were being lost easily and new members were completely unaware of the existence of a couple of crucial guides. So I went on the hunt for a solution...
The first solution provided a fantastic layout as well as a few little added extras, but because it completely separated the guides from the forum, the ability to inform members of updates and new replies was gone. Instead of being to use the 'New Posts' feature, users were required to do a separate search for new replies to guides, which in my opinion, is no good. That and a lot of new comers became aware of guides by seeing them replied to and showing up on the front page 'latest threads' module.
Then of course there was the big thumbs down that I think everyone agrees on, and that's the very clunky, very chunky 'middle' page between the index and the guides themselves. Bleugh. And this doesn't mention the biggest deal breaker for me, which was every single outbound (and a few internal) links to the guides were automatically broken. Eep!
Liking the 'category' layout so much, I fiddled with the forum Library and replicated that part pretty well, but of course it didn't have some of the features of the external library - the featured guides, 'my guides' and the ability to save guides as drafts. But, it did mean that every link was once again working, and new replies and threads showed up in both the 'New Post' function as well as the front page. But, I still wasn't 100% happy...
After an entire weekend of fiddling however, I think I've found a nice warm happy place. What we have now is...
- A forum based library, so new replies and threads showed up in both the 'New Post' function as well as the front page
- Categories to divide up the guides and allow for easier navigation to the area you are seeking help with
- A new side menu that not only brings in the 'Featured Guides' links that people liked, but also provides for easy navigation by linking to all categories. So if you're in the 'General' section, you don't have to go back out and then back in to go to the 'Gear Guides' section - just click on the left! (Doesn't show when reading an actual guide, only when in the various categories)
- The "block" type look of the guides once within a category, but not too blocky like before! And better than before, the text under the guides heading isn't just a preview of the guide itself, but is in fact a separate 'synopsis' that can be written up and included!! (If no synopsis given, then it takes from the start of guide itself.)
- On top of the synopsis, there is also the ability to add a single line quick description of the guide via the new 'byline' feature!
On top of that, each individual guide now has ratings! All members are able to rate between 1 (poor) through to 5 (excellent) on every guide in regards to:
- The quality of Information provided
- Format/Layout
- How easy the guide is to understand and follow
- as well as the 'overall' rating
The ratings you provide translate into stars (1 - 5) visible on each guides block. Making it easy for those looking for those looking to spot the good guides immediately.
Still in the works (ie I haven't kinked out the bugs yet) will be multi-page guides which will come with their own content menus, as well as the ability to tag your favourite guides similar to the 'My Guides' feature of the first Library attempt. There's probably a few more issues here and there that will crop up, to be expected. Please let me know of any bugs you find via reply to this thread.
As always, feedback always welcome.

Library Poll take 2!
Aug 20, 2008 - 2:57 AM - by Akasha
|
New Library or forum based Library?
I had a bit (a lot) of a play last night with the original forum based Library to see if I could make the categories work ok. I've been closely watching the How do you like the new Library? poll where Pernicious brought it up that the poll is a bit skewed since, "Most of those votes are on what people think of the first system. it stands to reason that you'd want to take a new poll on how it currently is to see if people think more highly of this new layout. As it is now, someone that voted negatively isn't able to change their vote if they approve of the new look, and visa versa."
Since the first poll is frustratingly close in sides anyway (frustrating in that it doesn't help me decided which way to go easily), I've created a second poll to help me decide: Which version of the Library do you like best? If you use the Library at all, please go vote.
Beta Shots!
Woo hoo, another beta testing Warlock fills out screens with pretty pretty pictures! Zixyar, Lord of Thirteen Hells, has updated the Beta Mounts thread with a picture of the flying mount in action! Looks like we ride the carpet like its a surfboard... interesting.

Very important news...
Aug 19, 2008 - 1:57 AM - by Akasha
|
STOP! Before you do another thing, including breathing so hold your breath , there's two very, VERY important threads you need to look at and action upon!
- First, the most important thread of the year, Vote my little girl... or else!!
There's a competition going here at the moment to become a star by featuring on the November cover issue of Practical Parenting magazine. And I've entered Savannah! Now, you all have to go vote for her or I'll boot you off the site! Don't look at me like that, I'm serious! Stop stuttering and GO VOTE!! See the thread for the link...
.
- Secondly is need for your feedback: How do you like the new Library?
This one is very important because the poll is currently so close, it's not giving me a clear answer on which way to go - stay or switch back. So if you use the Library, you need to give me your input! Note: At this stage, I am leaning towards reverting it back to a forum section, with tweaking to give the same category look...
Ok, once you have done those two things, take a deep breath and let's get on with the show.
New Video of Demon Form
Out latest Beta testing Warlock, Tizo, recently had some fun with Metamorphosis with the never ending life mobs in Blasted Lands. Being the sharing, caring evil Warlock that Tizo is, he made a video of some abilities he has, along with the demonic empowerment on the Felguard. Quote: "Being honest with you, i don't really see much change when I use Demo Empowerment, but i guess it works and the snare removal is handy (would be nice to be a damage boost though, 15 seconds 20% more Felguard damage or something)."
You can view and download the video here: Demonic_Empowerment_and_Mt.avi - FileFront.com
.: Discussion Thread :. Thankyou Tizo
Beta: first glance
Another new addition to the beta testers is our very own Akrab. After having some frustrations getting the client actually downloaded, they are now online and come sharing their first thoughts: I just tried the new infernal, it's on a 20 minute cooldown and has a 1 minute duration (it breaks apart after 1 minute).
There is only one word to describe it... Divine.
The Infernal's fire aura deals 180 fire damage per (maybe 2) second(s) to all around it. And its melee attacks deal about 300 damage per hit. It's very hard to kill as well. I tried it out in Vengeance landing against a level 69 Wild Worg (roughly 7k hp each). The infernal accidentally pulled 4 of them. Just to see what potential it has, I let it take care of the Worgs without interfering. The Infernal won with about 20% of its HP left. It's also the same level as the Warlock again.
Plus more on Fear, Haunt, Dark Pact which apparently, is just insane, and more... please see the discussion thread.
.: Discussion Thread :. Thankyou TheAkrab
Leipzig's Games Convention to feature Wrath Cinematic
WoW Insider originally predicted that we'd finally see the Wrath cinematic at BlizzCon in October, but we may not even need to wait that long. Multiple sources are reporting that Blizzard plans to show off the cinematic at the Games Convention in Leipzig on August 21st at 1PM.
If this is true, that means we only have 3 days left until we finally see if Gnomes get their cinematic day in the sun.

Will we still be the TRUE masters of evil?
DrkSnpr14 writes: As soon as I heard about Deathknights, my first reaction was one of confusion. They looked exactly link warlocks, but in plate. Way to make an evil necromancer feel useless...
Watching them progress, and seeing just how really evil and badass they've become, I'm starting to feel jealous. Warlocks have always filled the roll of evil doers, but now there's Deathknights, who on top of having some diabolical spells in their arsenal, also look the part.
How do you feel about Deathknights? Me, I'm still kind of lukewarm on the whole thing. I think warlocks got the shaft here

More discussion threads to take a look at:
- Spirit and upgrading lock gear in WotLK?
Nysalor was looking through the green and blue caster armor in Wowhead's Wrath of the Lich King search engine when they realized that they won't be upgrading most of their gear (Frozen Shadoweave + Spellstrike w/other crafted items) until around 75. But with only 152 spirit, how is this going to affect leveling and the effects of spirit on Life Tap and Fel Armor? Is downgrading gear so you have more spirit the answer? I don't know. Any thoughts?
- Why Tanks make Lousy Boyfriends
A bit of early morning humour, thankyou Morganfaey! "My first boyfriend was a warrior. He was a great guy, and he knew all the tricks. No matter what I was in the mood for, he could deliver. But after a while I called it off, because he just...well, didn't have the brains. I like a guy with a little intelligence, you know? .... "
- N00best Moments Contest
Another section of the funnies comes via Warpy's blog. "So there we are at the guild party, and Sabetha declares that there will be contests. One of these is the n00best-moment-since-becoming-an-experienced-raider contest. We begin with the usual stories: soulstoning the wrong target, falling off elevators, blinking into a raid boss and wiping the raid... so on and so forth. However, there were a few clear winners...."
